EN 17092 Classes Explained: AAA, AA, A, B and C
EN 17092 is the European standard for complete motorcycle garments. It has five classes: AAA (highest protection, mostly race and sport), AA (touring and adventure), A (light urban), B (abrasion-resistant without impact protectors) and C (base layers that hold protectors). Only a garment tested by a notified body can carry a class.

What EN 17092 covers
EN 17092:2020 replaced the older EN 13595 and prEN 17092 drafts for motorcycle jackets, trousers and one-piece or two-piece suits. Under the EU PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425, motorcycle clothing sold for protection is Category II personal protective equipment, so it must be type-tested by a notified body and carry the CE mark with its class. The UK applies the same requirements with UKCA or CE marking.
The five classes
| Class | Standard part | Typical garment | Impact protectors |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAA | EN 17092-2 | Leather race suits, high-end sport gear | Required |
| AA | EN 17092-3 | Touring and adventure jackets and suits | Required |
| A | EN 17092-4 | Urban and light riding jackets | Required |
| B | EN 17092-5 | Abrasion-resistant garments without armour | Not included |
| C | EN 17092-6 | Under-layers designed to hold protectors | Holds protectors only |
What is tested
- Abrasion resistance of the materials in each body zone, with the highest demands where riders hit the ground first (shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, seat).
- Seam strength, because a garment fails at its weakest seam.
- Tear and tensile strength of the materials.
- Restraint and fit — closures must hold and protectors must stay in place.
- Ergonomics, sizing and labelling, plus harmless-material checks.
Impact protectors inside the garment are tested separately to EN 1621-1 and EN 1621-2. See CE armour Level 1 vs Level 2.
What this means for your brand
- Design toward the class you will claim. AAA race suits need heavier leather in impact zones, double or triple stitched seams and Level 1 or 2 protectors.
- Freeze the specification. Certification applies to the tested build. Changing leather, seams or linings can invalidate it.
- Test with a notified body. The test house issues the EU type-examination certificate in the brand's (manufacturer's) name.
- Write honest copy. Until you hold the certificate, say "designed to EN 17092 AAA" or "with CE Level 2 armour", not "certified".
How Moto Armor supports certification
Our leather race suits are built to the construction AAA garments need: 1.2–1.4 mm cowhide or kangaroo, stretch panels, double or triple stitched impact seams and CE armour pockets. We state on each product page that suits are designed to EN 17092 AA or AAA and are not certified until reports exist. We can supply frozen-spec samples for your test house and keep that spec locked through bulk.
FAQ
What is the difference between AAA and AA motorcycle gear?
AAA is the highest EN 17092 class, mostly used for race and sport gear, with the toughest abrasion and seam requirements. AA is for touring and adventure garments that balance protection with comfort and weather features.
Is CE armour the same as an EN 17092 rating?
No. EN 1621 rates the armour insert; EN 17092 rates the whole garment. A jacket can have Level 2 armour and no garment rating.
Who certifies a motorcycle jacket to EN 17092?
A notified body (an accredited test house) tests the garment and issues an EU type-examination certificate. The brand placing the product on the market is responsible for the certification.
